This one is not to be missed, it's
going to be very busy for us, attempting to
build an organ during the show!!

WE DID IT. The organ was built with tine to spare & not one but two new pieces
of music arranged to be played on it. The AOB marquee was busy all the time.
This was defiantly a showcase for us.

MUSIC man John Pettifer is set to bring festive cheer to his Coventry street - by playing carols on a mechanical organ outside his home. The keen grandad is wheeling his self-built labour of love on to his drive for nightly performances in the run-up to Christmas. Mr Pettifer, of Ladbrook Road, Eastern Green, says he has already got a fanbase - his neighbours who can't get enough of his tunes! The 61-year-old is looking forward to the novel "gigs" which will start on Monday, in aid of Myton Hospice. He said: "The neighbours like it, I've never had a complaint from them - it's quieter than a pop group!" Mr Pettifer, a former church organist, spent two years making the instrument which is similar to a fairground organ. The eye-catching music-maker, which is worth about £10,000, features 130 pipes, a glockenspiel and a small drum kit. Wind is blown through the pipes using an electric blower, aided by a small computer to play the correct notes. The organ is called ChrisTina in tribute to a close friend, Christine, who recently died of cancer, and his wife, Tina. Mr Pettifer, a former technician at Coventry University, has previously made two other organs, but is putting the finishing touches to his latest creation. He will give it a trial run outside his home for about an hour from 6.30pm in the run-up to Christmas. Any donations will go to Myton Hospice. Mr Pettifer, who has two grownup children and two grandchildren, said: "The sounds are all working and I'm just painting it up. "It's never been out to the public before so this will be its debut outing." Mr Pettifer, who belongs to the Amateur Organ Builders Group, aims to hire out the organ for bookings from next Easter. He attends various steam fairs and country rallies to display and demonstrate his instruments. He transports his latest creation in a converted trailer, previously owned by the RSPCA, which he bought on auction website eBay. Details of his organ-building and performances are included on his own website www.petbusker.co.uk |
